DEFY Deck Stain is a high performance, water-based wood finish
formulated to prevent the damaging effects of water, fungi, and UV
radiation on exterior wood. It is a VOC-compliant blend of natural and
synthetic resins which penetrates wood pores to block out water and
provide long-lasting protection, from weather damage. The products
excellent penetration helps eliminate surface build-up and peeling.
DEFY Deck Stain
protects wood from warping, checking, swelling, cupping and damage from
wet/dry cycles.
DECK STAIN DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Surface Preparation For New and Weathered Woods: Do not use on painted or
varnished surfaces. Wood surfaces must be clean and porous. Use
SaverSystems wood cleaner/brightener,
TimberWash, to remove mill glaze,
dirt, mildew, graying, previous coatings, or other foreign matter that
might block surface pores and interfere with product penetration. Rinse
thoroughly or power wash (minimum 1500 p.s.i.) and allow to dry 12-24
hours. Drying time for deck stain will vary with environmental conditions. For dense
woods, like cedar, light sanding before application may be necessary to
ensure penetration.
To Clean Redwood or Cedar: TimberWash will darken redwood and some types of cedar. Use
TimberBrite to remove stains and restore redwood; test TimberWash on cedar before proceeding with cleaning.
Check wood porosity: Wood is ready to be treated if a few drops of sprinkled water penetrate wood in 1-2 seconds. If necessary allow wood to dry longer and retest.
Weather Conditions: Surface and air temperatures should be between
45° F, and 95°
F. Avoid deck stain application in direct sunlight. Apply deck stain to southern
exposures during the coolest part of the day. Although surface may be
slightly damp, do not apply to wet or water saturated surfaces, or when
rainfall is expected within 12-24 hours unless adequately protected with a
polyethylene film, or its equivalent.
DECK STAIN APPLICATION:
Test deck stain on a small area before starting general application to assure desired
results and coverage rates. Stir deck stain thoroughly before using. Do not thin
product. Provide adequate ventilation. Shake or stir contents
before, and periodically during use. To ensure absolute color uniformity
from container to container, mix at least 1/3 of the product from the contents of a used container with contents of a new one. Note: The color Clear prevents water penetration but will allow wood to turn silver gray. Use plastic, cardboard,
and/or drop cloths to protect all adjacent non-targeted surfaces such as
siding, windows, masonry, plant life etc. from overspray and runoff.
Brush: Use a good quality nylon or polyester brush. Roller: Use a
synthetic roller
with 1/2in to 3/4in nap depending on wood texture. Sponge pad applicators: Excellent for finishing decks and smooth wood surfaces. Do
not use on rough wood. Spray: Use lowest pressure that achieves a uniform
spray pattern to minimize fogging and overspray. For airless sprayers use
tips between .011 and .018. A SaverSystems
sprayer/applicator or other
pump-up sprayer may also be used. Back brush to ensure a uniform
application.
ON ALL SURFACES: Saturate wood with two wet-on-wet coats of deck stain for
maximum protection. Apply first coat of deck stain and brush product into surface working out
all drips, puddles, or areas of overspray before product dries. Use the
same method to apply a second coat of deck stain within 5-10 minutes, or as soon as
possible. Do not allow drying between coats. To avoid lap marks, do not
stop is the middle of boards, logs, or sections.
NOTE: Complete entire sections or to a natural break before allowing to dry.
Since the end grain of wood is more absorbent, it is important to
thoroughly coat the ends of boards or logs to prevent water penetration.
All surface checks on logs should be thoroughly coated.
VERTICAL SURFACES: Start from the bottom and work up. Treat the
entire
length of a board before moving up. If necessary, brush or feather in to
avoid
lap marks. Brush or roll in product before it dries and work out drips,
runs, or overspray.
DECKS: Remove all furniture, grills, planters, etc. Start by applying
DEFY
to the outside of railings, benches, and undersides of upper level decks
(only one coat is required on undersides. Once underside is treated,
immediately brush out all overspray, drips etc. on top of the deck. Treat
horizontal surfaces last.
WOOD SHINGLES: Clean and test for porosity. Apply 2, heavy
saturation
coats, wet on wet. Back roll, or brush between coats to ensure a uniform
application. Make sure all drips and puddles are brushed out. Recoat is
necessary when wood begins to fade. To avoid restart lines, start at the
bottom and treat entire length before moving up. HELPFUL TIPS: Immediately remove overspray from non-targeted areas with soap and water.
Overspray that is allowed to dry will be difficult to remove; dried product cannot be removed from concrete and masonry. Dry Time:
to touch, 2 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Allow 24
hours for
decks to dry before using. Clean Up: Clean tools immediately
after use with soap and water. Remove overspray or spillage immediately
with soap and water. Coverage: With two wet on wet coats, one
gallon of DEFY
will cover approximately 150-300 sq. ft. per gallon, depending on wood
texture and porosity.
MAINTENANCE:
Remove all substances which might stain or hold moisture on treated
surfaces as quickly as possible to minimize damage. Occasional cleaning
with mild detergent and water will generally restore treated surfaces to
there original appearance. For maximum protection, a light maintenance coat
of deck stain is recommended on horizontal surfaces every 12—24 months depending on foot
traffic and environmental conditions. Vertical surfaces should be
retreated every 3-5 years, or before wood starts graying.
